Iggy Azalea, for those who don’t know, is a breakout Australian pop star with a popular song out called “Fancy.” Several of the lyrics aren’t clean enough to post on the wall of a Christian writer’s blog. But for those of us living in the world and trying not to be of the world, we get exposed to songs like these from all directions.

As a teacher, I have to chaperone school dances, where music like this is sure to be played. I even heard a teenage girl playing it on her phone for her toddler sister in Walmart. Cover the kid’s ears, right?

So, what can we do to keep ourself unspotted from a society that continually thrusts stuff like this in our faces?

The first line of Ms. Azalea’s song claims: “First things first, I’m the realest.”

I know, right? Insert eyeroll here. But bear with me, as I draw a little inspiration from that. I bet you think you know where I’m going –“First things first, God’s the realest.” Well, true, but not exactly the point I want to make.

It’s the “first things first” that caught my eye, and got me thinking about Psalm 63.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

² To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

³ Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

⁴ Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

⁵ My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

My daughter loves the song “Step by Step,” which is based off this verse, and it’s so sweet to hear her and her little Bible class friends sing “I will seek you in the morning.” It dawned on me that this is the very definition of “first things first.”

King David, in this Psalm, not only has a grasp on the concept of first things first, he also seems focused on the last things, as shown in verses 6-7:

⁶ When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.

⁷ Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

How many of us, before we go to bed, fill our minds with things of this world? We watch the last few minutes of that certain show on DVR, or we read that book that has “naughty parts” in it–like “Fifty Shades of Yuck”–when that could easily be time for us to meditate on God.

Then, as soon as we wake up, we scroll through our Facebook or Twitter feed and try to catch up on the world.

If we give our mornings AND evenings to God, the chaos and worldly exposure in our lives is sandwiched between our thoughts of his mercy and everlasting love. It’s so much easier to clear the sin from our minds and hearts.

David wasn’t the only one with the idea to focus on God morning and night. Isaiah 26:9 says this:

With my soul, I have desired you in the night, yes by my spirit within me, I will seek you early.

For when your judgements are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

So, next time I hear “Fancy,” I’m going to change the lyrics in my head. First things first, I will seek Him.
